中年演员朱白岸来到与妻子初识的小岛，想寻求与妻子美好的回忆。一来到岛上就遇到渔民们信仰的佛头被偷窃事件，岛上人心惶惶，在追查佛头失窃的事情。朱白岸在这座岛上分别邂逅了三个女人，每一个都与他有着千丝万缕的关系，但最后他都用奇特的手法将她们杀死，随后自杀。 而朱白岸来到这座海岛的原因，或者说，他和妻子的经历给予他关于人生的觉悟，也慢慢浮出水面。在他自杀几周后，村民在海里打捞起朱白岸和丢失的佛头......诗句“谁家玉笛暗飞声，散入春风满洛城”贯穿全片，在诗人的想象中，笛声飞遍洛阳，传遍传承，这在片中似乎也在暗示着什么。原来，这关于爱的相逢和杀戮，不过是朱白岸的一场大梦。身外身，梦中梦正是本片的基调，现实与梦境到底哪个更真实是本片探讨的问题根源。。The film chronicles George's adventures as he befriends Kayla, a baby elephant, at a magic circus show and helps her travel across the country to be reunited with her family.
