来自山东的男主叶振云，1987年赶着改革开放的第一波浪潮来到了前沿城市打拼。在广州打拼期间由一个工地的搬运工慢慢变成一个寻找到自我价值的服装厂创业者，期间与老乡大学生刘芳之间产生感情纠葛。 影片以老年叶振云回忆的形式展现出时代的变迁。。摇滚歌手高兴落魄时与高三学生梦瑶偶然相遇后得以重返学校复读，俩人渐生情愫，上大学报到途中，高兴遭遇车祸导致毁容，不得不中止学业隐姓埋名到乡下陶瓷厂打工。梦谣寻找高兴无果，在酒吧当了兼职歌手。四年后，流落街头的高兴与梦瑶意外重逢……。A film version of a play Fassbinder directed in Hamburg, Clare Booth Luce's "The Women".
