故事讲述未来世界遭遇严重污染，人口出生率骤降，美国部分地区经历血腥革命后建立了男性极权社会Gilead，当权者实行一夫多妻制，女性被当做国有财产，有生育能力的女性称为“女仆”，被迫作为统治阶级的生育工具，女主角Offred就是其中之一，她周旋于统治者、统治者凶残的“妻子”、为统治者打理家务的年长女人“Martha”之间，想在活下去的同时找到自己被夺走的女儿。。Luke Ellis的父母某天突然被杀，而他则被拐走并被关在一处叫「The Institute」的地方，他的新房间与老家一样，但是没有窗，及门外尽是其他房间的门。这儿关着的孩子都有特殊能力，例如念力﹑心灵感应等。 这个地方会无情地榨取孩子们的超能力，不接受的话会受到各种惩罚；主角Luke渴望能逃出「The Institute」，不过过去从没有人成功过。。George Harvey Bone is a composer in early 20th century London, who is under stress because he is writing a piano concerto.
