Her husband, Tom Kale, is an ornithologist who begins an affair with an ex-girlfriend, Merle James, whose beauty and fragility echoes that of the birds he studi...。大学の非常勤講師として働く昼間吉人（３1）（岡山天音）は、妊娠中の姉から甥っ子・幸太（10）を押し付けられ、預かることに。しかし間もなく、幸太が失踪。吉人はどうにか幸太を探し出すと、現実に絶望し、意味ありげに「ここじゃないどっかに行きたい」という幸太に共感。二人の関係は深まり、共に吉人の専門である悲観主義（ぺシミズム）を突き詰めていく。“人生を悲観しつつも、どこか楽しい”不思議な共同生活を送る二人。やがて、それぞれにとって最悪の悲劇が起こる。。
