讲述了侯德榜少年时期在家乡福建省闽侯县的成长故事。少年时期的侯德榜半耕半读，勤奋好学，有“挂车攻读”的美名，在爷爷的鼓励下，他进入了十三姑开办的洋学堂，开始接触到西方的先进文化思想。在少年时期，他看见洋人用“鸦片”残害同胞的身心，和伙伴刘望利、小双、十三姑、严大仙一起揭露洋人的恶行，并想法找出治疗疟疾的药品。在目睹了洋人欺凌国人的时候，侯德榜逐渐的走上了科技救国的道路，一路上很多人见证了他的成长。。In The Nightmare, director Rodney Ascher (Room 237) has done just that.
